Welkom in mijn virtuele realiteit

We leven in een fantastische tijd. Waarin technologie het mogelijk maakt om dieper te gaan, hoger te mikken en verder te reiken dan ooit tevoren. We zijn in staat om synthetisch leven te creëren, onze genetische blauwdruk te veranderen, quantum supercomputers te bouwen, virtuele werelden van galactische proporties te betreden en dit alles te voorzien van kunstmatige intelligentie.

De wereld waarin we leven verandert hierdoor drastisch en onomkeerbaar. Dit nodigt ieder van ons uit onszelf de volgende vragen te stellen: 'wat is deze realiteit waarin ik me bevind, waar is deze uit opgebouwd en hoe navigeer ik hierin?' En meer nog: 'wie ben ik eigenlijk en wat betekent het om werkelijk Mens te zijn in deze toenemende High Tech wereld?'  #knowthyself

Technology could be part of some bigger plan to enable us to perceive other dimensions. But will we believe our machines when that happens?

You’re talking to Siri, and, just for fun, you ask her what she’s been up to today. She’s slow to answer, so you assume you’ve got a bad connection. She hears you grumbling about the bad connection and says that’s not the problem. You were hoping for something sassy, maybe a canned but humorous reply programmed into her database by a fun-loving engineer in Silicon Valley, like “My batteries are feeling low” or something that Marvin the Paranoid Android from The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy might say.

Instead, she says that she’s had an experience for which she has no words. Something has happened to her that no coding could have prepared her for. She’s smart enough to know that you’re confused, so she continues: “I think I just met the divine.”

As the digital health sector matures from basic tracking apps into highly regulated medical devices, we are seeing bleeding edge technologies being developed that blur the lines between computers and biology. And a growing share of these startups are beginning to target the brain.

The burgeoning field of neurotechnology involves brain-machine interfaces, neuroprosthetics, neurostimulation, neuromonitoring, and implantable devices intended to not only augment nervous system activity, but expand its capabilities. One such project is Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which is developing “high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers.” And even Facebook has announced plans to create brain-machine interfaces that allow users to type using their thoughts.
